Roofing

The discipline the business was built on, and still one of our strongest. Pitched and flat, traditional and modern, single repairs and full replacement programmes.

Illustration of R&D Group roofing work: a scaffolded Victorian villa being re-slated, with operatives stripping and battening a dormer, insulation and new timber exposed, a flat roof alongside being covered with torch-on felt, and two surveyors on the ground flying a drone and reviewing the survey on a tablet.

One part of a wider service

R&D Group started in roofing in 1973 and it remains a core discipline — but we're a general building repairs and renewals contractor now. If your roof problem turns out to be a ventilation issue, a gutter, or something structural, we can put all of it right rather than handing you back to your framework to find another firm. Pitched roofing

Slate and tile

Repair or replacement, matched to what's already there. Most of the housing stock we work on is Victorian to 1970s, so matching an existing slate or tile properly matters more than it sounds.

Coverings

Slating & tiling

Natural slating, clay and concrete tiling. Pitched-roof repairs and full replacement, including battens, underlay and structural timber repairs.

Details

Ridge, hip, verge & valley

The details that fail first. Re-bedding, dry-fix systems, valley lining and verge repair.

Lead

Leadwork

Flashings, soakers, valleys, aprons and parapet gutters, sized and fixed to code.

Masonry

Chimneys

Repair, repointing, re-flaunching and full rebuilding, with flashings renewed at the same time.

Rainwater

Fascias, soffits & guttering

Replacement and repair of rainwater goods, and the timber behind them.

Openings

Rooflights & roof windows

Supply and installation, plus replacement of failed units and their flashing kits.

Hip and ridge re-bedding on a natural slate roof — failed bedding taken out, broken slates replaced, the hip set back in fresh mortar. More in the gallery.

Renewed — new covering, soffit and gutter

Door canopies get left because they are awkward: decayed framing, a soft deck and a soffit nobody wants to open up. Deck, covering, fascia and soffit renewed in the one visit.

Chimney stack before rebuilding, the flaunching eroded and vegetation growing in the open joints
Stack before: flaunching washed out
New stepped lead flashings and soakers dressed into the slate roof around the chimney stack

Rebuilt, flaunched and the pots reset

Chimney rebuild in Sale — taken down to sound brickwork, rebuilt in the original bricks, underlay and flashings renewed at the same time, and the pots re-set in new flaunching. More in the gallery.

Flat roofing

Systems that suit the building

Different roofs want different answers. We'll survey first and recommend the system that fits the substrate, the falls, the detailing and how long you need it to last — not the one we happen to have on the van.

Felt

Torch-on felt

Multi-layer reinforced bitumen membrane, repairs and full strip-and-recover.

Liquid

Liquid-applied

Cold-applied waterproofing for complex detailing and roofs that can't be hot-worked.

Single ply

Single-ply membrane

Mechanically fixed and adhered systems for larger commercial and public-sector roofs.

Asphalt

Mastic asphalt

Repair and renewal of asphalt roofs, balconies and walkways.

Also on the roof

Everything else up there

01

Roof condition & drone surveys

Inspection and reporting without full scaffold access, so you can budget a programme rather than react to failures. Useful where a portfolio needs prioritising and nobody has been up there in years.

02

Roof cleaning & moss removal

Cleaning and treatment, with gutters and outlets cleared at the same time. Often the difference between a repair now and a replacement later.

03

Roof ventilation

Ridge, eaves and tile vents to correct roof-space condensation — frequently the actual cause of a damp problem reported inside the property.

04

Loft insulation

Top-up and full installation, laid so it doesn't block the ventilation path.

05

Roof safety & access systems

Man-safe systems, anchor points, walkways and guardrail, so future maintenance can be done safely.

06

Solar panel removal & reinstatement

Panels lifted, the roof repaired or replaced underneath, and the array reinstated — coordinated with your PV installer.
